Opportunity Detroit Logo3 Opportunity Detroit: Cherishing New Businesses, and Old Ones Too!Did you miss us, Detroit? Well, your favorite radio show, Opportunity Detroit, is finally back after a week-long break and we’re bringing even more good news. From Detroit’s newest businesses to long-cherished youth organizations, there are some great things happening in this city, and we’re determined to bring you all the good karma. Join hosts Paul W. Smith (WJR) and Stephen Luigi Piazza (Quicken Loans) to hear from the Motor City’s best and brightest. So what’s in store for you tonight? Here’s a quick rundown of tonight’s show.

You’ll hear from some guys who are preparing Detroit youth for real careers. Jason D. Lee is the Executive Director of the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP). DAPCEP is a non-profit organization that provides educational programming to over 4,000 Detroit area youth every year in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine. Jason will be joined by Jamie Hamilton, our very own Technology Vice President. Jason and Jamie will discuss why it’s important for our youth to be exposed to these studies outside of the classroom, a core mission of DAPCEP. The organization has partnered with eight universities, numerous corporations and the philanthropic community to give children experience in things like nanotechnology, computer programming, mechanical engineering and much, much more. Tune in tonight to learn more about the organization or visit their website or Facebook page.

Have you heard about Detroit’s watch industry?
Yes, watch industry. It’s kind of a big deal. Jacques Panis is the Director of Strategic Partnership for Shinola, Detroit’s newest assembly factory. Shinola manufactures watches, bicycles, high-end notebooks, iPad cases and more. So if you’re looking for straight-from-the-Motor-City merchandise, you’ll want to check ‘em out for sure. Tune in tonight so you can hear straight from Jacques about Detroit’s newest must-have gadgets. You can check out Shinola’s products and learn more at www.Shinola.com.

You’ll hear how one Michigan man is making big strides on college campuses. Adam Grant, a Michigan State alum, worked as an on-campus rep for major brands during his college career. This sparked an idea for his own business; a few years later, he approached the non-profit business accelerator, Bizdom, with his idea for Campus Commandos. Adam is now the CEO of Campus Commandos, and his company assists major brands in capturing the college demographic through strategy development, brand ambassador programs, email blasts, social media page development, sweepstakes and more. Adam has worked with the likes of Nike, eBay and Hewlett Packard to help carry their messages to thousands of college students nation-wide. You’ll hear more about Adam’s success story tonight, but in the meantime, you can visit www.CampusCommandos.com.

Detroit’s supermarket scene isn’t just in Eastern Market. The E & L Supermercado has been operating on the same block in Southwest Detroit for the past 65 years. Known for their quality, freshness and variety, as well as for having one of the largest full-service meat counters in the state, E & L draws clientele from all over Michigan, Ohio and Canada. They’re famed for having several brands of local tortillas that are brought in daily and sold hot off the shelves. Brian Dubrinsky, the grandson of founder Ed Dubrinsky, is the current produce buyer and manager, and he’ll be dropping by to tell us more about E & L. It’s truly a piece of Detroit history, and we love it because it has continued to draw business from the suburbs for decades. If you’re interested in some fresh, hot tortillas, or if you’re just planning your grocery shopping excursion, be sure to visit their website for more information.

Don’t forget to tune in this Friday evening, March 1, at 7:00 p.m. ET for all that and more!
